Overview

The Solution Architect’s role is to plan, coordinate and architect activities related to the integration of software programs, applications, and third-party solutions as required to meet business and technical requirements of the organization. This individual is also responsible for developing and maintaining architecture blueprints for the organization. This individual will oversee the design of technology solutions including software under development by in-house teams and commercial-off-the-shelf software deployed in the organization. Proven communication skills, problem-solving skills, and knowledge of technology standards and best practices are critical to successful performance in this role.

Responsibilities

Strategy & Planning

  • Develop and maintain IT Blueprints for the organization
  • Ensure that IT Blueprints are aligned with strategic business goals, the company’s overall strategic vision and IT Strategy
  • Present technology briefings to IT and business line management to help keep operational teams and delivery teams aware of industry changes and IT Blueprints
  • Plan, execute, and manage the integration of new technologies into exist systems and software throughout the enterprise
  • Conduct research into technology capabilities and industry trends
  • Assess opportunities and propose solutions to improve efficiencies IT environment
  • Build and maintain relationships with IT and business teams to gain an understanding of current technology and required functionality
  • Build and maintain relationships with technology vendors of systems deployed in the organization’s IT environment. Learn about their capabilities and help determine if / how these fit into the IT environment. Proactively evaluate new versions to understand capabilities to drive our upgrade path
  • Develop and maintain technology standards and architecture patterns to support and the efficient implementation and delivery of technology solutions

  

Technology Acquisition & Project Execution

  • Research and make recommendations on technology products and services in support of procurement, development and technology integration efforts
  • Lead the development and documentation of architecture overviews to assist with delivery efforts to estimate and integrate new technologies and technology changes into the IT environment
  • Align technology projects with corresponding IT strategies, business strategies and technology standards. This will be achieved by providing consultative guidance, documenting architecture approaches, leading complex decisions and reviewing technical designs
  • Collaborate with analysts, engineers, delivery teams and system owners in the design of new technology solutions and upgrades to existing technologies
  • Lead efforts with analysts, engineers, delivery teams and system owners to resolve architecture and design issues  
  • Review vendor proposals and technology designs to assess the alignment with technology standards and IT Blueprints.
  • Escalate design issues as needed with senior IT leadership and business sponsors and agree on mitigation approaches and action plans when architecture exceptions are needed on projects
  • Proactively recognize when architectural decisions have cross-IT impacts and work to identify the best solution with other architects, delivery and operations
  • Understand the IT processes and information needs of architecture, delivery and operations teams and demonstrate the ability to collaborate with IT teams and business teams to resolve design issues and develop technology solutions
  • Help ensure that technology projects meet technology requirements and goals, fulfill end-user requirements and identify and resolve systems issues

Operational Management

  • Proactively work to establish and maintain a knowledge base about technologies used in the IT environment
  • Serve as key subject matter expert about technologies used in the IT environment
  • Support root cause analysis as-needed for production incidents
  • Conduct architecture assessments of existing production systems to make recommendations to improve stability, security, end-user experience and operational efficiency
  • Evaluate results of technology projects, then report and make recommendations and changes to IT Blueprints based on findings

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree required in a related Information Technology or Computer Science discipline
  • 10+ years of experience designing and implementing technology solutions on large projects required – preferably in Financial Services industry
  • 3+ years of experience designing and implementing Payment systems and Treasury systems for Commercial Banking required
  • 5+ years of experience working in a technology organization for a Financial Services organization required– preferably in Commercial Banking
  • 3+ years in an Architect role with experience using frameworks and modeling required
  • Membership of professional organizations preferred (e.g. TOGAF)
  • Expert MS Office skills to include Visio, SharePoint, PowerPoint, Excel and Word and comfort using these tools to build system designs and provide updates on key initiatives
  • Sound data analysis, problem resolution, team building, judgment and decision making skills required
  • Sound knowledge of all aspects of technology architecture - networking, application, infrastructure and security
  • Ability to communicate highly technical and complex security concepts effectively across all levels of the organization (both IT and business)
